Marbella Town Hall opens bypass to reduce traffic jams

Last week the Marbella Townhall opened a road to the south of San Pedro de Alcantara town to reduce the traffic jams which daily block road N-340 at both entrance and exit of this town. The second phase of this bypass which runs parallel to N-340 between Las Petunias and Guadalmina Baja took a long time to complete due to discrepancies with Confederación Hidrográfica del Sur and also with the Ministry of Public Works.
Proincosta, a developer in this area, invested 2.13 million euros in this 2.7 kilometre long road in payment of an urban agreement with the Townhall. "This alternative road will not be the solution but will help to reduce the traffic jams in this area until the tunnel is built," said Marbella Mayor, Julián Muñoz, during the official opening of the road.
The tunneling of road N-340 crossing San Pedro de Alcantara has been demanded by residents and tourists alike as one of the most needed projects in the area. The Marbella Townhall, the Central Government and the Regional Government of Andalusia have been blaming one another for the delay in constructing this tunnel although everybody agrees that it is very much needed. This road span bears an average of 45.000 vehicles a day during the summer.
